India Joins UN's Prestigious Champions Group for Global Crisis Response
India has recently accepted an invitation from United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres to join the esteemed Champions Group of the Global Crisis Response Group (GCRG). Established by the UNSG in March 2022, the GCRG aims to tackle pressing global challenges related to interconnected crises in areas such as food security, energy, and finance. The Champions Group, consisting of representatives from Bangladesh, Barbados, Denmark, Germany, Indonesia, and Senegal, oversees the group's activities and coordinates a united global response.
India's decision to join this esteemed group highlights its growing stature as a global leader and its unwavering commitment to addressing contemporary global challenges. By actively participating in the GCRG, India seeks to contribute significantly to the United Nations' endeavors in finding effective solutions to developmental issues that impact the world, particularly developing nations. This step demonstrates India's dedication to collective action and its determination to address critical issues affecting global development.
To spearhead India's involvement in the GCRG process, Sanjay Verma, Secretary, West, in the Ministry of External Affairs, has been designated as the Sherpa. As India's representative, Verma will play a crucial role in engaging with other members of the Champions Group and actively contributing to the discussions and initiatives aimed at addressing global crises.
A meeting of the Champions Group is scheduled for July 21, where India will have an opportunity to collaborate with other influential nations and shape strategies for an effective and coordinated global crisis response. About Global Crisis Response Group (GCRG):
The Global Crisis Response Group (GCRG) was established by the UN Secretary-General in March 2022 with the aim of addressing the complex and interrelated challenges in food security, energy, and financing. Comprised of 32 members, this group plays a crucial role in providing high-level political leadership and coordinating a global response to the ongoing crises. To oversee its activities, the GCRG has a distinguished Champions Group consisting of representatives from Bangladesh, Barbados, Denmark, Germany, Indonesia, and Senegal. This esteemed group ensures effective governance and strategic direction. Additionally, the UN Deputy-Secretary-General leads the GCRG's Steering Committee, further emphasizing the importance and commitment of the United Nations towards addressing these pressing global issues.
