Singapore now holds the title of the most powerful passport in the world, surpassing Japan, according to the latest ranking by the Henley Passport Index. This index measures how many countries a passport holder can visit without a visa. Singaporeans can now access a staggering 192 destinations without needing a visa.

Japan, which held the top spot for the past five years, has slipped to third place, along with Austria, Finland, France, Luxembourg, South Korea, and Sweden, with visa-free access to 189 countries.

India has improved its position in the rankings, climbing five spots from last year. It is now ranked 80th along with Togo and Senegal, with visa-free access to 57 countries.

The United States, once a top-ranked country in the index, has dropped to the eighth position. On the other hand, the United Kingdom has risen two places to fourth, a position it last held in 2017, following the uncertainty of Brexit.

At the bottom of the list is Afghanistan, with its passport offering easy access to only 27 destinations. Yemen (99), Pakistan (100), Syria (101), and Iraq (102) complete the bottom five countries with the least visa-free access.

The Henley Passport Index was created almost 20 years ago by Dr. Christian H Kaelin, Chairman of Henley & Partners. It relies on official data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to rank passports based on the number of destinations their holders can visit without obtaining a visa beforehand.
