Every year, the University Grants Commission (UGC) releases a list of universities termed "fake" by them, meaning they lack the authority to confer degrees. This year, 20 such institutions have been identified, with Delhi topping the list with eight universities on it.

What does "fake" mean?
According to the UGC Secretary, Mr. Manish Joshi, these universities offer degrees against the provisions of the UGC Act. Consequently, any degrees awarded by these institutions will neither be recognized nor considered valid for higher education or employment purposes.

Delhi's "fake" universities:
Delhi stands out with eight universities on the UGC's list:
1. All India Institute of Public and Physical Health Sciences
2. Commercial University Ltd, Daryaganj
3. United Nations University
4. Vocational University
5. ADR-Centric Juridical University
6. Indian Institution of Science and Engineering
7. Viswakarma Open University for Self-Employment
8. Adhyatmik Vishwavidyalaya (Spiritual University)

Other states with "fake" universities:
Apart from Delhi, several other states also have universities on the UGC's list:
1. Uttar Pradesh: Four universities
   - Gandhi Hindi Vidyapith
   - National University of Electro Complex Homeopathy
