17 arrested for alleged ragging at medical college

On Saturday, police said they had filed a complaint against 17 people for allegedly making racist and sexist remarks and ragging a student at a government medical college and dormitory.

A 24-year-old Occupational Therapy student at GS Medical College and KEM Hospital filed a complaint with the police on Friday, according to an official.

His dormitory companions and other medical college students, according to the complainant, would verbally harass, hurl casteist slurs, and threaten him.

According to the official, the complainant claims that the accused harassed him on several occasions over the last three years, with some of the instances taking place in the presence of the dormitory wardens, who did not take notice.

He added that when the victim and some activists filed a complaint with the Dean's office last month, the anti-ragging committee met in the hostel.

According to the officer, the victim then went to the Bhoiwada police station in downtown Mumbai and filed a case against the alleged students, wardens, and others.

According to him, a FIR has been filed under the Scheduled Caste and Schedule Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, Maharashtra Anti-Ragging Act, and the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
