IMD issues orange alert: Chennai pounded by rain, causing traffic jams and floods

On Thursday afternoon, rain and high winds pounded numerous portions of Chennai and its suburbs. With roughly 13cm of rain expected till 5:30 p.m., an orange alert has been issued in the seaside city.

Marina beach, Patinapakkam, MRC Nagar, Nandanam, Mylapore, and other suburban locations of Chennai had chilly breezes and mild rains.

Several roads in the city were inundated, causing traffic jams, according to reports.

According to the (IMD) Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai, MRC Nagar had the most rainfall at 176.5mm as of 6:15 pm today.

While at Mylapore, there was almost 200mm of rain, “More clouds blooming off Chennai coast and looks like rains won’t stop anytime soon. Go home safe, avoid T.Nagar, Alwarpet, Royapettah, Nunga & surrounding areas,” tweeted Pradeep John, a weather blogger better known as the ‘Tamil Nadu Weatherman.’
Rain is predicted to persist for a few more hours as additional clouds converge towards South Chennai. In the next few hours, the South Chennai – ECR belt, which has been spared from heavy rains, may get balanced rainfall. The ancient city region received 150-200 mm of rain. Other locations have received close to 100 mm of rain.

In the districts of Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Chengalpattu, the IMD projected "heavy to very heavy" rains. It was predicted that the rain would last two hours.

On December 31 and January 1, the IMD predicted significant rain in isolated portions of coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
