India’s most successful Test captain: Virat Kohli

After seven years as India’s Test captain, Virat Kohli has announced his retirement. Kohli was India’s most successful Test captain, captaining the side for 68 matches and winning 40 of them. On Saturday, he announced his decision, following India’s 1-2 loss in the Test series against South Africa.

Dhoni retired from Test cricket in December 2014, and Kohli took over as India’s Test captain. In terms of wins, he had surpassed his predecessor Dhoni in 2019.  Kohli said in his tweet, “It has been 7 years of hard work, toil and relentless perseverance every day to take the team in the right direction. I’ve done the job with absolute honesty and left nothing out there. Everything has to come to a halt at some stage and for me as Test Captain of India, it is now. There have been many ups and also some downs along the journey: but never had there been a lack of effort or a lack of belief.”

Kohli’s captaincy achievements were recognised by the Board.

Kohli declared earlier this year that he would step down as India’s T20I captain after the World T20. Following India’s elimination from the tournament, Rohit led the team in the T20I series against New Zealand. The BCCI stated ahead of the South Africa visit that Rohit will also captain India in one-day internationals.
