The Supreme Court announced today that an inquiry led by Justice Indu Malhotra will look into the security lapse that left Prime Minister Narendra Modi stranded on a flyover in Punjab for 20 minutes last week.
The Supreme Court has stated that former supreme court judge Justice Indu Malhotra will assist the panel two days after it ordered the formation of a committee to investigate the security breakdown that occurred during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Punjab on January 5th.
According to the Supreme Court, the panel will be comprised of Justice Indu Malhotra (retired), the Director General of the National Investigation Agency, the Director General of Punjab Security, and the Registrar General of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Who is Indu Malhotra?
Indu Malhotra, the daughter of a well-known lawyer, the late Om Prakash Malhotra, joined in the Delhi Bar Council in 1983 and became an Advocate-on-Record in the Supreme Court in 1988.
On April 27, 2018, she was elevated to the Supreme Court, and three years later, on March 13, 2021, she retired. Indu Malhotra made history in 2018 when she became the first woman lawyer to be appointed to the Supreme Court.
During her brief term on the bench, Justice Malhotra dealt with a wide range of constitutional concerns as well as charges of sexual harassment against then-Chairman of the Supreme Court of India, Ranjan Gogoi.
