Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the Congress national secretary, unveiled the party's initial list of 125 candidates, including 50 women, for the upcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday.

Asha Singh, the mother of an Unnao rape victim, is also running for the Unnao Assembly constituency.

She told a press conference that 40% of the Congress candidates are women, and another 40% are youth, and that the party is making a new and historic start as a result.

She claimed that the party has nominated such candidates who have fought for justice in Uttar Pradesh and that the party wants them to rise to the fore and become a part of the state's power structure.

"We expect to establish a new sort of politics in Uttar Pradesh with 40% women and 40% young," she stated.

A new message appears on our list. "We want to convince those who have fought for their rights and sought justice in the past that they have the power to fight for their rights, and that the Congress party will give them that power to be a part of power in the state," Vadra added.

The AICC general secretary in charge of Uttar Pradesh did not respond to a question on whether she will run in the elections.

She stated that the party will not wage a negative campaign in these elections, but rather a good campaign for a bright future for Uttar Pradesh, emphasising issues affecting people, particularly women, and development.

When it comes to the Uttar Pradesh administration, she claims it has been "dictatorial" and that the election debate is biassed. "Our main goal would be to bring people's issues to the forefront," she explained.
