The BJP finalized its list of 172 candidates for the next assembly elections on Thursday, despite the party's significant losses as a result of back-to-back withdrawals of high-ranking ministers and MLAs. Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister, is expected to run for the seat of Ayodhya, according to reports.

Union Home Minister and former BJP President Amit Shah, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Dinesh Sharma attended the meeting. Sunil Bansal, the state general secretary (organization),  Swatantra Dev Singh, the UP BJP leader, Union Minister of State Sanjeev Balyan, and former Union Minister Radhamohan Singh are among those in attendance.

Following the approval of the BJP Parliamentary Board, the final list of candidates will be released.

In the first round, voters will be asked to choose between 58 seats spread across 11 districts: Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Baghpat, Ghaziabad, Hapur, Gautam Buddha Nagar (Noida), Bulandshahr, Aligarh, Mathura, and Agra. While nominations for this phase are due by January 21, the election will take place on February 10. On March 10, the outcomes will be announced.

The BJP won 312 of the total 403 Assembly seats in the 2017 Assembly elections, a landslide victory. In the elections, the party received 39.67 percent of the vote, with the SP winning 47 seats, the BSP winning 19, and the Congress winning only 7.

Dinesh Sharma might be fielded from any Lucknow constituency, whereas Maurya could run from the Sirathu seat.

Because they have tested positive for Covid, Union ministers Rajnath Singh, BJP President J P Nadda and Nitin Gadkari joined the meeting via video conferencing. The Uttar Pradesh assembly elections will be held in seven phases between February 10 and March 7. In Uttar Pradesh, voting will take place on February 10, 14, 20, 23, 27, and March 3, with the results being announced on March 10.
