At Newlands in Cape Town, South Africa defeated India in the crucial third Test, winning the three-match series 2-1. With his 82-run knock, Keegan Petersen led the way for South Africa, and his technique against the Indian bowling assault was outstanding. With Petersen first and then Temba Bavuma, Rassie van der Dussen also had a superb innings to help South Africa win. Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Shami each took one wicket for India in their second innings. In South Africa, India has yet to win a Test series.
South Africa opened the fourth day at 101 for 2 with an easy goal of 212 to chase after captain Dean Elgar and Keegan Petersen put on a 78-run partnership. Elgar, however, was out with the last ball of the day, a strangle down the leg side from seamer Jasprit Bumrah, to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. India had been enraged when Elgar was given a reprieve from the ball-tracking technology while he was on 22. India batted first and scored 223, South Africa 210, and India 198 in their second innings.
South Africa completed the task in 63.3 overs after resuming day 101/2, with important contributions from Keegan Petersen (82), Rassie van der Dussen (41 not out), and Temba Bavuma (32 not out). Petersen was the only player to be dismissed on the day, as he was bowled by Shardul Thakur after playing one on to his stumps.
