The Tamil Nadu government said on Saturday that it would erect a statue commemorating the British engineer who built the century-old Mullaperiyar Dam to address the draught problem. The government will erect a statue of Colonel John Pennycuick, a British engineer who built the dam in the nineteenth century, according to a statement made by Chief Minister MK Stalin. Surprisingly, the statue will be erected in his native town of Camberley, England, rather than in any Indian state. Tamils in Camberley, according to the notification, have received permission from St Peter's Church to erect the statue.
Brigadier-General John Pennycuick and his wife Sarah had John Pennycuick in 1841 in Pune, Maharashtra. Cheltenham College in England was where he received his education. His father and eldest brother, Alexander, fought in the Battle of Chillianwalla, according to historians. During the combat in 1849, both of them died. In 1857, he enrolled at the East India Company Military College in Addiscombe, Surrey.
Later, in 1858, Pennycuick was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Madras Engineer Group, and in 1960, he returned to India. The Queen later made him a companion of the Order of the Star of India in 1895. For more than six years, he worked for the Public Works Department (PWD). He served as Chief Engineer on the Mullaperiyar Dam construction project and was given a medal for his services in the Abyssinian Expedition of 1867-1868.
