Due to ill health, Salim Abdul Gani Gazi, one of India’s most wanted suspects in the 1993 Mumbai serial bombings case, passed away in Pakistan. Gazi died of a heart arrest in Karachi on Saturday, according to sources in the Mumbai Police Department. Gazi, who was engaged in the planning and execution of multiple bombings in Mumbai, and several other members of Chhota Shakeel and Dawood Ibrahim’s gang, escaped the city shortly after the tragedy.
Gazi was a key figure in the 1993 Mumbai serial bombings, which killed more than 250 people and injured over 600 more. He was instrumental in transferring several of the suspects in the 1993 bombings to Pakistan via Dubai for weapons and explosives training.
Gazi, along with numerous other members of Chhota Shakeel and Dawood Ibrahim’s gang, had escaped Mumbai soon after the 1993 serial blasts. Salim Gazi is alleged to have fled to the United Arab Emirates before settling in Pakistan. Gazi used to oversee Shakeel’s commercial and illegal operations in Pakistan. On March 12, 1993, a series of bomb bombings shook Mumbai, killing at least 257 people and injuring 713 more.
Yusuf Memon, 54, died of a heart attack last year while serving a life sentence at the Nashik Road Central Jail. He was Tiger Menon’s brother, the mastermind behind the 1993 Bombay bombings.
Tiger, Yusuf’s brother, was a key co-conspirator in the bomb plot with Dawood Ibrahim, and while Ibrahim arranged for the RDX to land at Shekhadi Coast in Raigad district, Tiger was in charge of the logistics of moving them into Mumbai. In 2015, Tiger’s other brother, Yakub Memon, was hanged.
