According to sources, the project cost of the new Parliament building could increase by more over Rs 200 crore due to additional expenditure on steel, electronics, and other works, and the CPWD was expected to receive approval from the Lok Sabha Secretariat.

They estimated that the project would now cost roughly Rs 1,200 crore. Tata Projects was awarded the new Parliament building project in 2020 for Rs 971 crore. The government had set an October 2022 deadline for the construction and hoped to host the winter session in the new structure this year.

The CPWD has offered explanations for the predicted cost increase, according to sources, including greater steel costs as buildings are now built to seismic zone 5 standards.

According to reports, the cost of electronics is projected to climb as plans are being made for a new audio-visual system, which will include tablets on the tables of MPs in both Houses of Parliament.

Another reason is that the project developer must adhere to many Supreme Court rulings, such as the need that all earth excavated from the project site be delivered to the projected Eco Park in Badarpur rather than being sold.

“Earlier this month, the Lok Sabha Secretariat got a request from the CPWD asking in-principle clearance for an increase in the cost of construction of the new parliament building,” a source said.
