Today’s house meeting of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation began with a disturbance. The Aam Aadmi Party refused to accept Sarabjit Kaur as the Mayor. The commotion grew to the point where Aam Aadmi Party and Congress councillors surrounded the mayor’s chair and started shouting. To deal with the incident, police were also called to the scene. The councillors, on the other hand, began to argue with them as well. The councillors said that the elections of the mayor, senior deputy mayor, and deputy mayor have been challenged in the High Court. The matter is pending in court. In such a situation, they do not consider BJP councilor Sarabjit Kaur as mayor. The mayoral election has also been challenged by the Congress. On which the BJP quipped that they should have come to vote on the 8th. On the other hand, the BJP, while replying to the Aam Aadmi Party, said that there was a hole in their own party. Therefore, the party had to face defeat in the corporation elections. The debate went on in the house for about an hour.

In the midst of this huge uproar, the mayor of the city got up from the chair for some reason. This chair was taken over by the Senior Deputy Mayor. Referring to the Punjab Municipal Act, he announced the passing of the controversial agenda related to the mayoral elections. At the same time, the agenda related to the five members of the Finance and Contract Committee was also passed. However, the opposition continued to protest.

Senior Deputy Mayor Dilip Sharma, who took over the mayor’s chair after an uproar that lasted for about two hours, ordered the marshals to take out the rioting councillors. When the marshals started taking them out, the opposition councillors sat down. Arguments have started with the marshals of the police.

Mayor Sarabjit Kaur said that whatever decision comes from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, she will accept it with full respect. Till then, the house should be allowed to run. However, the opposition did not agree to this, and the uproar continued.

During this, Commissioner Anandita Mitra also kept on explaining to the councilors. This is the first house meeting after Sarbjit Kaur was elected mayor. There are 14 councillors of the Aam Aadmi Party, 13 of the BJP, 7 of the Congress and 1 of the Shiromani Akali Dal in the house.

On January 8, there was a commotion in the mayoral election

The Aam Aadmi Party couldn’t win the mayoral elections despite obtaining the most seats. The BJP won the Mayor’s, Senior Deputy Mayor’s, and Deputy Mayor’s seats on January 8. The AAP had aggressively opposed it, calling it an illegal win. AAP councillors caused a commotion in the chamber. Even the cops had to be summoned. In Punjab’s Haryana High Court, the AAP has also challenged the mayoral election.
