Neeraj Chopra, a gold medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, is one of six athletes to receive the Padma Shri Award this year, while Devendra Jhajharia, a Paralympics legend, is set to receive the Padma Bhushan, the country's third-highest civilian honor.

Vandana Katariya, the star of India's women's hockey team, and Avani Lekhara, Sumit Antil, and Pramod Bhagat, gold medalists at the Tokyo Paralympics, are among those who will receive the Padma Shri Award.

Brahmanand Sankhwalkar, the former captain of the Indian football team, will also get the Padma Shri Award. From 1983 to 1986, the 67-year-old headed the Indian football team as a goalkeeper.

The Ministry of Home Affairs said in a released statement, "This year the President has approved conferment of 128 Padma Awards including 2 duo case (in a duo case, the Award is counted as one)," the Ministry of Home Affairs said in a statement.

"The list comprises 4 Padma Vibhushan, 17 Padma Bhushan and 107 Padma Shri Awards. 34 of the awardees are women and the list also includes 10 persons from the category of Foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI and 13 Posthumous awardees."

Notable recipients of the Khel Ratna Award for 2021 include Neeraj Chopra, Avani Lekhara, Sumit Antil, and Pramod Bhagat.

In a track and field event, Neeraj Chopra became the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal at the Olympics. With a throw of 87.58m, the Haryana athlete blew away the rest of the field in Tokyo, winning gold in men's javelin.

President Ram Nath Kovind will also award Neeraj the Param Vishisht Seva Medal on the night of Republic Day. Last year, Aavani Lekhara made headlines by earning gold and a bronze medal in shooting at the Tokyo Paralympics. Sumit Antil won gold in the men's javelin F64 event at the Tokyo Paralympics, breaking the world record, and Pramod Bhagat won gold in badminton.

Padma Awards are given in three categories: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri. They are one of the country's highest civilian honors. Art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, and other disciplines/fields of activity are all recognized with awards. The Padma Vibhushan is given for outstanding and recognized service, while the Padma Bhushan is given for distinguished service of high order and the Padma Shri is given for distinguished service in any field. Every year, on the occasion of Republic Day, the prizes are presented.

The President of India bestows the awards at ceremonial functions held at Rashtrapati Bhawan every year around March/April. The President has approved the awarding of 128 Padma Awards this year, including two duo cases (in a duo case, the Award is counted as one).

This year's award recipients include four Padma Vibhushans, seventeen Padma Bhushans, and 107 Padma Shris. The list also contains 10 foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI and 13 posthumous awardees, with 34 of them being women.
