Sania Mirza, an Indian tennis player who just announced that 2022 will be her final season, says she made the statement too soon and is “regretting” it because she is constantly asked about it.
There are several explanations for this. It’s not as easy as saying, “OK, I’m not going to play.” Mirza stated after her match, “I feel like my recuperation is taking longer, and I’m putting my three-year-old son in danger by travelling so much with him, and that’s something I have to consider.”
“I believe my body is deteriorating. My knee was really aching today, and while I’m not saying that’s why we lost, I do believe it’s taking longer for me to recuperate as I get older,” she added.
She stated that she no longer finds it as easy to find the motivation to come out and play every day.
“There are more days now than there used to be when I don’t want to do that. I’ve always stated that I’ll continue to play until I like the grind, which I’m not sure I do anymore “Mirza stated.
“Having said that, I still intend to play the entire season because I’m having a good time. I’ve worked extremely hard to return, get in shape, lose weight, and try to provide a positive example for women, especially new mothers, to pursue their aspirations as much as possible. I don’t think my physique is capable of it beyond this season. It’s finished,”
“I’m playing tennis to win matches, and as long as I’m playing, I’m going to try to win every match I play, so retiring isn’t on my mind all the time.”
I enjoy playing tennis, and I always have, win or lose, and I still have the same attitude toward it: I give it my all, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, but I’m still in it 100 percent for the rest of the year, and I don’t want to think about what’s going to happen at the end of the year?,” Mirza explained.
Sania believes she was playing at a good level, but she has always known that 2022 would be her final season, and Wednesday’s loss was not the catalyst.
“I’m capable of playing at a high level.” We beat top-10, 20 players in the first week of the event in Adelaide. I’m able to play at a reasonable level. If I finish this season, I’m very sure it’ll be my last. “I am certain I will not return to Melbourne to compete in the Australian Open,” she stated.
I have fond recollections of playing singles, doubles, and mixed doubles here. It’s been a fantastic adventure. I’m not looking forward to June or July because I’m living week to week with my body, with a virus, and there’s so much uncertainty,” she continued.
The Indian tennis player has six Grand Slam titles under her belt and is ranked number one in the WTA doubles rankings. Mirza is also the first Indian to reach the WTA singles top 30.
Mirza had a successful singles career, peaking at world No. 27 in mid-2007, making her the highest-ranked female player from India ever.
Mirza is one of just two Indian women’s tennis players to win a WTA title, and the only one to reach the top 100 singles rankings.
Mirza declared on January 19 that she will retire from tennis at the end of the 2022 season because her body was “worn down” and she no longer had the passion or stamina for the daily grind.
