One of India's most wanted terrorists engaged in the 1993 Mumbai serial attacks has been apprehended by Indian intelligence in a massive international operation. In Mumbai, 12 bombings occurred in various locations, killing 257 people and wounding 713 others.
Abu Bakar, a terrorist detained in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, was involved in weaponry and explosives training, the landing of RDX used in the serial blasts, and conspiracy and planning at Dawood Ibrahim's Dubai villa.
Abu Bakar, who is thought to be one of the main perpetrators of the 1993 bombings, had been living in the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan. He was recently caught in the UAE based on information provided by Indian intelligence.
Bakar was caught in the year 2019. However, due to certain documentation errors, he was able to get himself released from the UAE authorities' custody.
Top sources verified that Bakar is being extradited by Indian authorities. Abu Bakar, who has been on India's most-wanted list for nearly 29 years, will finally face justice in India after he is returned from the UAE.
Abu Bakar, whose full name is Abu Bakar Abdul Gafur Shaikh, was involved in smuggling with Dawood Ibrahim's top lieutenants Mohammad and Mustafa Dossa. He smuggled gold, clothing, and electronics into Mumbai and other neighboring landing places from Gulf countries. In 1997, he was served with a Red Corner Notice.
Abu Bakar has various business interests in Dubai and is married to his second wife, an Iranian national.
On Friday evening, top sources in federal agencies confirmed the development to India Today, saying that Bakar's extradition process has begun.
