On Saturday, the Union health ministry said that the total number of COVID-19 vaccine doses delivered in the country has surpassed 169 crore. It said that more than 40 lakh vaccine doses were administered until 7 p.m. on Saturday, and that the daily vaccination tally is expected to rise as final reports are compiled late that night.
According to the ministry, more than 1.46 crore (1,46,98,311) prophylactic doses have been given to healthcare workers (HCWs), frontline workers (FLWs), and those aged 60 and up. The first phase of the countrywide immunisation campaign against the viral disease began on January 16 of last year, with HCWs being immunised. FLW vaccinations began on February 2 of last year.
The next phase of Covid immunisation began on March 1 of last year for adults over the age of 60 and those aged 45 and up who have certain co-morbid disorders. Since April 1 of last year, all persons above the age of 45 have been vaccinated throughout the country. From May 1, the government decided to broaden its vaccination campaign by enabling anyone above the age of 18 to be inoculated against the viral sickness.
The next phase of COVID-19 immunisation for teenagers aged 15 to 18 years old began on January 3 this year. In response to an increase in the number of coronavirus cases caused by the Omicron variety, the country began giving precaution doses of the Covid vaccine to HCWs, FLWs, including those deployed on election duty, and individuals aged 60 and above with comorbidities on January 10 this year.
