All five Congress MLAs in Meghalaya joined the BJP-backed ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) on Tuesday, leaving Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress (TMC) as the only opposition party in the state Assembly. They will, however, remain members of the Congress, according to CLP head Ampareen Lyngdoh. After 12 MPs, including former chief minister Mukul Sangma, defected to the TMC in November last year, the Congress was reduced to only five MLAs. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma received a letter of support from the Congress Legislature Party (CLP).
"Today, February 8, 2022, we, the undersigned MLAs of the Indian National Congress, have agreed to join the MDA (Meghalaya Democratic Alliance) government. We want to help you and the MDA improve the government's arms and decision-making so that our combined (sic) efforts can move the state ahead in the best interests of its residents "According to the letter,
Lyngdoh, as well as PT Sawkmie, Mayralborn Syiem, KS Marbaniang, and Mohendro Rapsang, signed the letter. Sonia Gandhi, the Congress's president, was also sent a copy of the letter.
"The five @INCMeghalaya (Meghalaya Congress) MLAs have opted to join the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance administration for the welfare of the state's people, particularly our individual constituencies," Lyngdoh tweeted, alongside a photo of the Congress MLAs with the chief minister.
"We've joined the MDA, but we'll still be in the Congress," Lyngdoh said to sources
"We are delighted to welcome members of the Congress Legislative Party, who have officially committed their support for the MDA Government today. We shall work together under the MDA banner to strengthen the government in the people's and state's interests "Conrad Sangma, whose National People's Party heads the state's ruling coalition, took to Twitter to express his disappointment.
The TMC, which had practically any foothold in the northeastern state before 12 Congress MLAs led by Mukul Sangma joined Mamata Banerjee's party on November 25 last year, responded with predictable joy to the event.
"The power-hungry and corrupt have formally joined forces. This alliance between the Congress and the MDA, which is led by the NPP, has once again MARKED @AITCofficial as the only credible alternative in Meghalaya!, "The party sent out a tweet.
"Devoted to Meghalaya, WE WILL CONTINUE TO FIGHT FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF ALL," the statement continued.
The BJP, whose Sanbor Shullai is a minister in the Meghalaya administration, backs the NPP-led MDA.
The NPP is also a member of the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), which is the northeastern counterpart of the National Democratic Alliance at the national level.
The NPP is a member of the ruling coalition in Manipur, which is led by the BJP, although the two parties are contesting the state legislature elections separately.
