Few people pay attention to the Kanshi Ram statue in Khawaspur, Punjab's Ropar district, where he was born. His brother Harbans Singh's residence is only 500 metres distant. The only evidence that this was the home of the Bahujan Samaj Party founder is a blue-colored elephant water tank on the roof of the house. Several photos of Kanshi Ram with party workers and relatives decorate the walls of his bedroom. But it's the one with a nearly unrecognisable Mayawati, his political heir, that jumps out.
Harbans Singh lives in a Dalit slum, and multiple flags of allies Shiromani Akali Dal and BSP are fluttering there ahead of the Punjab assembly elections on February 20. Few people are aware of it. Singh, on the other hand, does and is irritated. "I won't vote for this partnership," he says It's a sinister alliance. Mayawati is now in Uttar Pradesh. They are unconcerned about Punjab, and both are now corrupt. "They aren't required."
But he feels the Congress's pick of Charanjit Singh Channi as a Dalit chief minister is a good one and that it will make a difference. Ropar is part of the Dalit belt, which also includes Chamkaur Sahib (Channi's birthplace) and the Anandpur Sahib Lok Sabha seat, which is now available to all voters. The BSP, which was formerly Kanshi Ram's bastion, has seen its performance dwindle in recent years. Punjab's vote share in the 2014 Lok Sabha election was at an all-time low of 9.6 percent.
The Akali Dal allied with the BSP in the hopes of capturing Jat Sikh and Dalit votes and returning to power. The Dalits, on the other hand, have never voted in large numbers, and the Akali-BSP combination had not anticipated the Congress's trump card of a Dalit chief minister.
The Akali-BSP candidate in this area, Daljit Singh Cheema, rejects any threat posed by Channi. "He should have been asked to quit," says the author. He isn't a Dalit by any stretch of the imagination. Dalits don't loot, and he doesn't stand a chance from here." "This is merely an emotional outburst," Harbans Singh stated of his rage. Other factors are to blame for the rage."
While speaking with sources , Harbans Singh breaks down. "Take a look at our home. It's a piece of cake. It's not like Mayawati's numerous possessions. She deceived my brother and took everything from him. The BSP never longer sends anyone to meet with us. They have no regard for Kanshi Ram, their creator. She was the one who took our money. She will not be forgiven by Rab (God)."
