India defeated West Indies by six wickets in the first T20I in Kolkata on Wednesday, with Suryakumar Yadav and Venkatesh Iyer partnering for 48 runs for the fifth wicket. India chased down the 158-run target with seven balls to spare, thanks to Suryakumar’s undefeated 34(18) and Iyer’s 24(13). West Indies scored 157/7 in 20 overs after being asked to bat first.
India responded by scoring 50 runs in the first five overs. Ishan Kishan got off to a poor start, but after Rohit Sharma smashed Odean Smith for 22 runs in one over, he picked up the pace. Their partnership came to an end on 64 runs when Roston Chase took Rohit Sharma’s wicket (40 off 19).
Virat Kohli, Ishan, and Rishabh Pant were the three wickets India lost in short succession after his dismissal. Suryakumar, on the other hand, put on another outstanding performance to help India win the match handily. Bhuvneshwar Kumar had earlier dismissed Brandon King in the first innings, giving the hosts an early lead. The visitors then surpassed 50 in 7 overs thanks to Kyle Mayers and Nicholas Pooran’s boundaries.
Yuzvendra Chahal, on the other hand, ended the streak when he dismissed Kyle Mayers on 34. WI was at 71/2 at the half-way point. After 11 overs, the score was dropped to 74/4 after debutant Ravi Bishnoi took two wickets in the same over, dismissing Powell (2) and Chase (1). (4).
West Indies managed to add 49 more runs to their total in the final four overs, giving them a total of more than 150 runs. Harshal Patel eventually dismissed Pooran, but not before the left-hander had scored 61 runs. For the visitors, Kieron Pollard (24*) remained unbeaten.
Deepak Chahar came a few overs later to remove Akeal Hosein. Pooran infused new life into the innings with a stunning half-century. Harshal Patel, who also bowled a magnificent final over to help India restrict West Indies to 157/7 in 20 overs, removed him for 61.
