Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi and Congress candidate and Punjabi singer Shubhdeep Singh, popularly known as Sidhu Moosewala, were booked for violating election regulations in Mansa district on Friday, the last day of campaigning for Sunday’s assembly elections.

At Mansa, the EC has filed a case against Channi under section 188. Candidates were supposed to stop campaigning after 6 p.m. on Friday, according to EC guidelines. The EC also announced on Thursday that all rallies and public meetings will end on Friday at the scheduled time. Meanwhile, CM Channi, along with Congress workers and Mansa candidate Sidhu Moose Wala, did take part in a Padh Yatra (foot march).

According to sources, Charanjit Singh Channi, who released the party manifesto in Chandigarh, left around 5 p.m. for Patiala and arrived at 6 p.m. Despite the fact that he was short on time, the Congress leader proceeded to campaign.

Moosewala was campaigning with more than 400 supporters that was beyond the permissible limit,

The case was filed at City-1 Mansa police station under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant).

Channi arrived in Mansa on Friday evening for Moosewala’s door-to-door campaigning.

According to the first information report (FIR), Dr. Vijay Singla of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) filed a complaint with election observer CK Yadav, alleging that Congress leaders violated the model code of conduct by canvassing after the campaigning period had ended.

After a spot check by the flying squad team (FST), poll officials discovered that Channi was not a Mansa voter and had violated the poll code by campaigning in another constituency.
