Rohit Sharma been selected captain of India’s Test team by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday, ahead of the upcoming series against Sri Lanka. The decision was made as India’s T20I and Test squads for the upcoming series at home against Sri Lanka, which starts on Thursday, were announced.

Late last year, Rohit was appointed as India’s full-time white-ball captain, succeeding Virat Kohli. Following Rohit’s appointment as captain of India’s Test team ahead of the forthcoming series, fans congratulated the 34-year-old batsman on Twitter.

When MS Dhoni announced his retirement in Australia in early 2015, Virat Kohli took over as full-time Test captain and went on to become India’s most successful Test captain ever.

“From getting dropped in Tests to Test Captain of India, Rohit Sharma’s rise in test cricket has been an inspiration. Sun has risen very well,” a fan tweeted.

While Rohit Sharma has been selected Test captain, Jasprit Bumrah has been named as the vice captain for the Sri Lanka series. After a poor run of form, experienced batters Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara were also dropped from the Test squad.

Since being named Test vice-captain ahead of the just concluded South Africa series, Rohit has been the frontrunner. He was forced to withdraw from the tour due to a hamstring issue.

The tour was supposed to begin with a two-match Test series, but it will now begin with T20Is, with the first encounter taking place on February 24 at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. On February 26 and 27, the second and third Twenty20 Internationals will be played in Dharamshala.

From 2021 to 2023, the countries will play two Tests as part of the ICC World Test Championship cycle. The first Test will take place in Mohali from March 4 to 8, with the second Test taking place in Bengaluru from March 12 to 16.
