If their stay in the east European country "is not deemed essential," India has asked its citizens, including students, to return. According to Sources family members of Indian embassy personnel in Ukraine would also be brought home.
The Indian embassy in Ukraine issued a second warning today, advising Indian people to take any available commercial or charter flight out of the country amid fears of a Russian invasion. Students were previously advised to leave Ukraine as quickly as possible.
"In light of the sustained high levels of tensions and uncertainty in Ukraine, all Indian nationals whose stay is not deemed essential, as well as all Indian students," the Indian embassy in Ukraine tweeted.
"Indian students should also contact their respective student contractors for updates on charter flights, and continue to monitor the embassy's Facebook, website, and Twitter accounts for any developments," the embassy added.
Indians in Ukraine can also call the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or MEA, which has set up a dedicated control room, for information and support. Earlier this week, there were instances of people not being able to get aircraft tickets. A 24-hour helpline is available at India's embassy in Ukraine.
On February 22, 24, and 26, Air India, which was recently sold by the government to the Tata group, will fly three special planes to Ukraine. The flights will fly to and from Ukraine's major airport, Boryspil International Airport.
Last-ditch diplomatic attempts are continuing today to avert a Russian invasion of Ukraine and a devastating European war, according to Western countries.
According to the news agency AFP, a phone conversation between French President Emmanuel Macron and Russian President Vladimir Putin about the situation in Ukraine began today as planned. According to Western leaders, Russia has more than 150,000 troops in Ukraine, as well as missile batteries and warships, ready to strike.
Vladimir Putin has also ratcheted up his rhetoric, repeating his demands for written guarantees that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO, will reduce troops in eastern Europe to levels last seen decades ago.
