The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed a petition asking for the cancellation of all state boards’, CBSE’s, ICSE’s, and the National Institute of Open Schooling’s offline exams for Class 10 and 12. (NIOS).The CBSE board exam for Term 2 will not be cancelled!

The appeal was dismissed by a court led by Justice A M Khanwilkar, who stated that such a petition promotes “false hope” and “confusion” throughout the country.

“This not only raises false hopes, but it also creates uncertainty among students who are preparing,” the bench, which also included Justices Dinesh Maheshwari and C T Ravikumar, observed.

The bench remarked, “Let the students do their jobs, and the authorities do their jobs.”

The petition, filed by Anubha Shrivastava Sahai, an advocate and child rights campaigner, and the Student Union of Odisha-NYCS, asked the CBSE and other school boards to establish other ways of evaluation after they suggested to offer board examinations for classes 10 and 12 in offline mode.

Shrivastava Sahai voiced disappointment with the Supreme Court’s decision, claiming that “these students, too, will suffer like students from the previous two batches.”

Students from throughout the country filed a petition in the Supreme Court, asking for the board exams to be cancelled and students to be evaluated using alternative evaluation methods.

Following that, the matter was presented to India’s Chief Justice, N. V. Ramana, who referred the case to Justice Khanwilkar’s bench.

In 2021, a bench led by Justice AM Khanwilkar issued an order cancelling board exams and assessing pupils using alternative assessment methods.

The Central Board of Secondary Education declared on February 10 that from April 26, it will administer examinations for Classes 10 and 12 in an offline format.

The plea stated, “The other petitioners are students as well as the parents from different states, who were aggrieved by the Boards’ decision. That, the mental pressure that is created for performance in this exam is so much that every year a number of students commit suicide for fear of underperformance, or of failure.”
