The Tripura government has decided to distribute free workbooks to students in classes 1 to 12 so that they can prepare for their exams at home.

Ratan Lal Nath, the Minister of Education in Agartala, told the media, "Workbooks of total of 85 subjects, prepared by the State Council of Educational Research and Training ( SCERT) were launched. This is the first of its kind in the state and even in the country. Even if there is again rise in Covid-19 cases, they could prepare at home with these workbooks. The books will be distributed soon and all the students will get these books from the next academic year."

According to recent estimates, keeping schools closed for the past two years prevented pupils from seeing their peers, hampered mental maturation, and resulted in learning losses.

After an extended break due to the Covid-19 pandemic, classes from pre-primary to higher secondary have resumed beginning January 31 this year.

Nath said the shutdown of schools had harmed children’s academics and emotional health when announcing the reopening of schools last month.

Tripura launched 'Nutan Disha' (New Direction) in 2019 to analyze students' genuine educational state, effectively equip kids in grades 3 to 8, and minimize learning loss. It involved an educational examination of each student in the state's primary and elementary schools, and it was discovered that 57 percent of kids in classes 3 through 8 couldn't read or answer simple arithmetic problems.

The government also implemented a number of novel initiatives, such as recorded lessons broadcast on local television channels and the national broadcaster, neighborhood courses, SMS and social media-based education, and so on.

Last month, 10-minute educational news updates for students, instructors, and parents were started twice a week.

This is the first initiative of its type adopted across the country” Nath said.

Tripura launched a special channel on which famous educationists discuss curricular and co-curricular concerns with students stranded at home during the epidemic as part of its creative initiatives. In January of this year, eight months after creating the Vande Tripura channel, the government began broadcasting educational news bulletins for students, teachers, parents, and the general public for 10 minutes twice a week.
