New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) vice-chairman Satish Upadhyay stated on Wednesday that the council has worked out a plan to become the first urban local body to entirely transition to green energy by 2025.
According to Upadhyay, NDMC would purchase 142MW of electricity from non-carbon based power generation sources as part of the plan authorised at a council meeting on Wednesday, and add another 100MW of solar-based power next year. Currently, roughly 450MW of power is used in the NDMC territories.
Green energy will be boosted to 32 percent this year, 65% by 2023, 83 percent by 2024, and 100% by 2025, according to Council member Kuljeet Chahal.
According to Upadhyay, NDMC presently generates roughly 10MW through various rooftop solar power projects, but says it cannot expand due to a shortage of open space. “We have resolved to acquire 100% green energy and have completed a phased upgrade of our power procurement.” There will be no carbon dioxide emissions as a result of NDMC’s electricity consumption.
“NDMC has set an ambitious goal of switching to 100 percent renewable energy, making it the first municipal body in the country to accomplish so,” Chahal added. After the expiration of its power purchase deal with thermal power generating plants, NDMC has opted not to extend it. “At the same time, NDMC is entering into new purchase agreements with only renewable energy providers, such as hydel and solar,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Upadhyay stated that the council will create smart highways that are aesthetically built to provide user comfort while maintaining safety.
“The project will cover Tilak Marg, KG Marg, Dr Zakir Hussain Marg, Pandara Road, Tolstoy Marg, Hailey Road, Tansen Marg, and Babar Road, and the overall cost of the project is Rs.7.25 crore,” he added.
Green energy plant in Rewari starts producing power-
The Haryana government announced on Friday that the country’s first green energy plant, which generates power from stubble, has been completed and is running in Khursaidnagar village in Rewari district.
The Haryana Renewable Energy Development Agency (HREDA) and a private enterprise collaborated to build the plant. “Power generated from stubble through this plant is supplied to Bisoha 33KV substation, and regular power transmission from the substation to Bisoha hamlet has begun,” a government spokesperson said.
Rewari has been instrumental in putting Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s recommendations for stubble management into action. In just 24 hours, the green energy plant produced 48,000 units of power from 600 quintal stubble with no pollutants.
The Panchkula Renewal Energy Development Agency has recognised this as the first pollution-free plant. It has five 400KW engines that have begun the process of producing power from stubble without polluting the environment.
The Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam’s 33KV sub-station Bisoha receives two megawatts of power each hour, and payment for the generated power is made according to government guidelines.
According to the spokesperson, this plant uses biomass gas instead of a boiler, thus there is no risk of pollution to the environment. According to the spokesperson, electricity is generated only from gas produced by five stubble-powered engines.
