Following a meeting of the IPL Governing Council on Thursday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 will begin on March 26 in Mumbai. The decision was made during an IPL Governing Council (GC) meeting on Thursday evening (February 24).

The 10-team IPL will feature 70 league matches and will begin just 11 days after the Indian cricket team’s current tour of Sri Lanka concludes. Due to the coronavirus epidemic, the league stage of the Indian Premier League 2022 will be played across four venues in Mumbai and Pune, with the final planned for May 29 in Ahmedabad.

In Mumbai, 55 league matches will be conducted, while 15 will be held in Pune. Each side will play four matches in the Wankhede and DY Patil Stadiums, as well as three at the Brabourne and MCA Stadiums. The IPL 2022 final will take place on May 30 in Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, often known as Motera Stadium. Motera Stadium will also host the playoffs.

The IPL 2022 will feature 14 more league stage matches, thanks to the arrival of two additional teams, Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants. The Chennai Super Kings, led by MS Dhoni, will try to defend their crown and tie Mumbai Indians for the most successful franchise.

Previously, on February 12 and 13, the IPL 2022 super auction was held in Bengaluru, where all ten clubs bought players and assembled their squads for the forthcoming 15th edition of the league.

And the venues are – Wankhede Stadium (20 matches), Brabourne Stadium (15) and DY Patil Stadium (20) in Mumbai, and Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) ground (15) in Pune.

The venue option for the four playoffs are being kept open for the time being. The fixtures can be expected as early as the first week of March.

The IPL will begin on March 26; a complete schedule will be released soon. There will be crowds, but only in accordance with Maharashtra government policy. The government will decide whether it will be 25% or 50% of the stadium capacity, according to Cricbuzz, citing IPL chairman Brijesh Patel.

This season, the IPL will expand to ten teams, with the addition of two new teams, the Lucknow Supergiants and Gujarat Titans.

The ten clubs spent more than INR 551 crore on 200 players to complete their respective squads at the recent IPL 2022 super auction.

It’s worth noting that due to the coronavirus pandemic, the entire 2020 edition of the event was hosted in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Following COVID-19 incidents within the bio bubbles, the 2021 edition in India was initially suspended after 31 matches. In September and October 2021, the Indian cricket board (BCCI) moved the IPL to the United Arab Emirates.

The reigning champions are the Chennai Super Kings.Meanwhile, the IPL Governing Council discussed the possibility of reviving the T20 Challenge, the women’s counterpart of the IPL. It was last held in 2020, with three teams competing: the Supernovas, Velocity, and Trailblazers.
