The US is in talks with India over its stance on Russia's invasion of Ukraine, according to White House press secretary Jen Psaki, who noted that New Delhi has yet to publicly criticise Moscow's aggression.

Psaki told reporters, "We continue to interact with the Indians."

When challenged about the matter by a reporter on Thursday, President Joe Biden stated, "We haven't entirely resolved that."

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged for a "immediate cease of violence" in a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, according to his office, although he did not publicly condemn Moscow's military intervention.

Russia has long had close connections with India, and Moscow is a key military supplier to the South Asian country.

On Friday, India abstained from a UN Security Council voting on a resolution condemning Russia's "aggression" against Ukraine and calling for its soldiers to be pulled out immediately.

Despite months of efforts by the US to strengthen its relationships in the Asia-Pacific region, Biden has yet to convince New Delhi that he can make Putin a "pariah on the international stage."

The Biden administration is especially eager to give the so-called diplomatic "Quad" — Australia, India, Japan, and the United States — a new lease on life in order to counter China's growing dominance in the area.
