Prime Focus on Maintenance of Tracks & Rolling Stock,Fire Safety and Training of Personnel

As the country and economy is opening up post corona-19 lockdown, Rail traffic over the Railways is also being normalized. With Passenger safety being the most important objective of the Railways, a Mega safety drive has been launched on Northern Railway to prevent exigencies. All departments of the zone are participating in the drive with the General Manager and Principal Head of Departments closely reviewing the progress.
The drive is being conducted to bring out the shortcomings, deficiencies and irregularities of the system if any in maintenance of track system (fixed assets) and locomotives, coaches and wagons (rolling stock). It will also be seen that set procedures for maintenance of assets and operating of trains are being strictly followed at all points over the division.  Training of Personnel to eliminate factors like human error are also strictly being implemented.
Sh. Ashutosh Gangal, General Manager Northern Railway has inspected several important sections in all the divisions. The progress of the drive is being monitored by him with instructions to bring awareness and deep sensitization at all levels to prevent any untoward incidents.Instructions have been given to all departments to ascertainperfect functioning of systems and to monitor general health of assets. Feed backs are being taken on daily basis.
Intensive inspection drives especially of busy routes and night time patrollingare being conducted to ensure faults are detected on time.  Emphasis is also being given on inspections and maintenance of signaling gears. Railway bridges have been inspected to verify their structural health. Points and crossings are being checked thoroughly for proper and safe adjustment. Inspection of rolling stock units:the Coaching and Freight Depots,Loco shedsare being done. Maintenance of all rolling stock assets in the field are also being monitored.Fire Safety audits and drills are also being conducted.
Northern Railway has the largest Railway network over Indian Railway and is increasing continuously with commissioning of new projects. To enhance its safety standards,Northern Railway has eliminated many Level Crossings (LC) gates.Manned LCs are progressively being provided interlocking System. Mechanical Interlocking of stations is also being replaced by more efficient Electronic Interlocking.

Northern Railway organizes Safety Seminars on important topics to bring in safety consciousness and awareness amongst the Railway Staff as a regular curriculum. During the drive special safety courses and counselling sessions especially for fire safety for the crew and maintenance staff and officers are being conducted extensively. The emphasis is on stemming out the root cause rather than just quick fix.
Special drives are held from time to time to sensitize the Road users against trespassing on tracks and LCs Gates. NukkadNataks on Road-Rail safety are also organized to bring in awareness.  A novel method has been adopted by Northern Railways where in Safety Messages are flashed across the mobile phones of road users about precautions to the taken while crossing level crossing gates. More than 6.2 crore such SMS were sent to bring in awareness.
To encourage staff to be more vigilant and responsive, at the end of every month, meritorious staff instrumental in preventing any accident, is felicitated at the General Managers level, with a merit certificate and individual cash award, in acknowledgement of their exemplary acts of alertness which have helped in averting accidents. This works as a motivational tool and also encourages other staff to adopt safe practices.  Accidents and Unusual incidents are monitored on daily basis by General Manager. These incidents are properly investigated, and corrective action is taken. This helps in creating a synergy amongst the staff and officers at the highest level to improve safety.
