Two Russian warships have commenced a week-long sojourn in Shanghai, engaging in a sequence of naval drills alongside China's PLA Navy. As per China's PLA Daily, the prominent newspaper of China's PLA, the two Russian warships are scheduled to stay in China for a duration of seven days. Russian news agency TASS stated that this marks the maiden visit by Russian naval vessels subsequent to the removal of anti-coronavirus measures.
The first-ever friendly visit by two Russian Navy warships, namely the corvettes RFS Sovershennyy (333) and RFS Gromkiy (335), has taken place at the port of Shanghai. This marks the seventh occasion of Russian naval ships visiting Shanghai. The corvettes Gromkiy and Sovershennyy have berthed at the Chinese naval base situated at the meeting point of the Huangpu and Yangtze Rivers. The People's Liberation Army (PLA) has announced that these warships from Russia's Pacific Fleet will engage in a series of drills together with their Chinese counterparts.
The two Russian corvettes will partake in a range of maneuvers with Chinese ships, encompassing coordinated movements, communication exercises, and maritime search and rescue operations.
The Russian naval vessels will stay in Shanghai until July 11, engaging in a seven-day visit that involves Chinese and Russian naval officers and soldiers visiting each other's warships to facilitate professional technology exchanges. The activities will also include friendly basketball games and other events.
Chinese analysts emphasized that the collaboration and interactions between the Chinese and Russian militaries will be regularized in response to increasing strategic pressure from the United States in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. They underlined that the military cooperation with Russia aims to jointly uphold regional peace and stability and is unrelated to ongoing geopolitical crises. Additionally, the article highlighted that China maintains a neutral position and continues its mediation efforts regarding the Ukraine crisis.
