In the past 24 hours, Uttar Pradesh has witnessed tragic incidents resulting in the loss of lives due to heavy rainfall. A total of 34 people have lost their lives across various districts of the state. Out of these casualties, 17 individuals were struck by lightning, 12 died by drowning, and five lost their lives due to excessive rains. Reports indicate that five people drowned in Raibareilly, while four deaths occurred in Bareilly. Santkabirnagar and Badaun districts each recorded two casualties. Four individuals lost their lives due to lightning strikes in Mainpuri. Other districts with fatalities include Ghazipur, Jalaun, Kanpur Dehat , Kannauj , Ballia, Bagpat , Etawah, Unnao, and Agra.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to provide assistance to the families of the deceased. He has announced a monetary aid of Rs 4 lakh to be given to the next of kin of each deceased person.
Among the 75 districts in the state, around 68 districts experienced rainfall, as reported by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). Data reveals that in the past 24 hours until noon on Sunday, Uttar Pradesh recorded an average rainfall of 1.3 cm, which is 56 percent higher than normal and classified as "excess" rainfall.
The districts in western Uttar Pradesh, adjoining Delhi and Uttarakhand, particularly the Meerut zone, received higher rainfall compared to the central and eastern parts of the state. The heavy rains were accompanied by cloudy skies.The continuous downpour has resulted in a rise in water levels in major rivers flowing through the state, including the Ganga, Ramganga, Yamuna, and Rapti, as reported by the IMD.
The heavy rains have caused waterlogging in several areas of the state capital, Lucknow, leading to traffic congestion and inconvenience for commuters. Authorities are working to address the situation and minimize the impact on daily life.
The recent events highlight the need for preparedness and efficient disaster management strategies to mitigate the effects of such heavy rainfall. The government, along with relevant departments and local authorities, is focused on providing relief measures and support to affected communities.
