Demand for Revoking Ban on Muharram Processions in Kashmir

Political parties in Kashmir are urging the government to lift the long-standing ban on Muharram processions. They argue that since the valley has witnessed improved normalcy and other religious processions are permitted, there is no justification for prohibiting Muharram processions.

Muharram processions have been disallowed in Kashmir since the 1990s, during the period of militancy. However, leaders from various parties now question why this specific religious event is restricted when other processions are allowed.

Tanvir Sadiq, the National Conference chief spokesperson, expressed that Muharram processions should be permitted as the situation in Jammu and Kashmir has reportedly improved, according to statements by the Lieutenant Governor and the home minister. He questioned why the traditional Muharram processions on the 8th and 9th days are stopped while other religious events like the Amarnath Yatra and Janmashtami processions are allowed.

Imran Reza Ansari, the People's Conference secretary general, believes that allowing Muharram processions could serve as a confidence-building measure. He emphasized that all Shia organizations have jointly requested the Jammu and Kashmir government to allow the processions, especially given the peaceful situation in the region over the past few years.

Ansari emphasized that Muharram is a month of mourning for Muslims, not a festival, and it holds deep spiritual and faithful significance. He called on the government to reconsider the ban, given the improved conditions and the earnest appeals from the Muslim community.

Traditionally, Muharram processions in Kashmir marked the eighth and tenth days of the 10-day mourning period and used to pass through specific routes. The ban was imposed during the era of militancy, with authorities stating concerns about religious gatherings being exploited for promoting separatist sentiments.

Now, with the situation showing signs of improvement, there is a growing call to lift the ban and allow the Muharram processions to take place peacefully.
