Remote Village in Distress as 78 People Remain Missing and Decomposing Bodies Pose Challenges
Four days after a massive landslide hit a village in Maharashtra's Raigad district, burying the village and causing 27 fatalities, the district administration decided to halt rescue operations on Sunday. Currently, there are still 78 people reported missing.
The decision to call off the rescue efforts came after a meeting between rescue officials, the state government, and villagers. The situation became even more challenging as the last body recovered on Saturday was already decomposing. Sadly, the undetected bodies and animals were also decomposing, resulting in a foul smell spreading across the area.
The landslide struck Irshalwadi village on a fort's top, and its remote location made it difficult for rescue teams to reach the area quickly. Additionally, heavy rainfall further hampered their efforts to find the missing people. As of Sunday, the death toll from the landslide stands at 27, with 78 individuals still unaccounted for.
The revenue team is currently evaluating the extent of land lost in this tragic event, and they plan to propose allocating land to the affected individuals to aid in their rehabilitation.
Furthermore, the authorities plan to hold a special camp to issue various certificates and documents, including Aadhaar cards, to the villagers who lost their belongings in the landslide.
In an effort to support those who lost their homes in the disaster, the state government pledged to provide new homes for all the people of Irshalwadi.
