Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Banwarilal Purohit issued a directive on Monday, urging the Municipal Corporation (MC) and Chandigarh Smart City Limited (CSCL) to accelerate the clearing of legacy waste from the dumping ground in Dadumajra. During his visit to the site, he expressed concern for the health and hygiene of the residents in the area.
Purohit instructed the authorities to promptly clear the backlog of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) inside the boundary wall. RDF is a type of fuel produced from various forms of waste, including municipal solid waste and industrial waste.
He further urged the officials to expedite the process of clearing the remaining legacy waste from the mining site, utilizing additional manpower and machinery if necessary. The MC commissioner informed the governor that 5 lakh tonnes of legacy waste mining had been completed under the Smart City Mission. The agency is now removing the RDF stacked at the site, and approximately 20 acres of land will be reclaimed. The area will be leveled using soil from Patiala ki Rao.
The governor emphasized the need for immediate clearances for lifting the soil, and the CSCL CEO assured that the work to recover this 20-acre land would be completed by August.
Additionally, the officials informed the governor about plans to set up a temporary composting plant after clearing the site. He urged them to expedite the reconstruction of the boundary wall, which was damaged during recent rainfall, along with bio-remediation of legacy waste, and the establishment of a temporary composting plant and an integrated solid waste management plant.
