Recent Poll Reveals Changing Perception of Former President among GOP and Potential Legal Challenges Loom

A recent poll conducted between July 10 and 16 shows that more Republicans and Republican-leaning independents now view the former president unfavorably compared to last year. The percentage of those with an "unfavorable" opinion of him has risen from 24% in 2022 to 32% in 2023. Additionally, Trump's "favorable" rating among Republicans has decreased from 75% to 66% during the same period.

These findings coincide with Trump distancing himself from the other GOP presidential contenders. According to an average of major polls from FiveThirtyEight, Trump currently maintains a strong lead over other Republican candidates, with an average of 50.8% support in national polls. This significantly surpasses the second-place candidate, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has an average of 19.4% support.

On the other hand, Democrats' views of the former president have remained consistent over the past year, with 91% continuing to view Trump unfavorably.

The Pew Research survey did not inquire about the reasons behind the shift in Republicans' views of Trump. However, over the past year, Trump has faced legal scrutiny for non-campaign-related matters. He has been indicted twice, once by the federal government for allegedly mishandling sensitive documents after his time in the White House, and again in New York for allegedly falsifying business records as part of a "hush money" scheme before his election in 2016. Furthermore, there seems to be the possibility of a third indictment against him for his efforts to overturn the presidential election in 2022.
