On Tuesday, the Rouse Avenue court in Delhi cleared Haryana MLA Gopal Kanda of charges in a case involving the suicide of Geetika Sharma, a former air hostess with his now-defunct MDLR airlines. The court also acquitted co-accused Aruna Chadha. The judge stated that the prosecution failed to prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt.
The charges against both Kanda and Chadha included abetment to suicide, criminal intimidation, destruction of evidence, criminal conspiracy, and forgery. Initially, Kanda was also charged with rape and unnatural sex, but these charges were later dropped by the Delhi High Court.
The case dates back to August 4, 2012, when Geetika Sharma, in her suicide note, accused Kanda of harassing her mentally. She was found dead at her residence in Delhi on August 5, 2012. Kanda was then serving as the Minister of State for Home Affairs in the Haryana government and was the managing director of MDLR group. Following his acquittal, Kanda spoke to the media and asserted that there was no evidence against him. He maintained that the case was falsely made against him, and he is relieved by the court's verdict.
In her suicide note, Sharma had mentioned the mental harassment she allegedly faced from Kanda and also named his associate, Aruna Chadha. Tragically, a year later, Sharma's mother also committed suicide.
The trial against Kanda and Chadha began in May 2013. In July 2013, the Delhi High Court removed the charges of rape and unnatural sex against Kanda. However, on December 6, 2013, the trial court decided to proceed with the trial for abetment to suicide against both Kanda and Chadha.
This case has been closely watched, and with the recent verdict, Kanda and Chadha have been acquitted of the charges related to Geetika Sharma's suicide. The legal proceedings have been a long and challenging process for all parties involved.
