Reportedly, Spotify has incurred a significant £34 million financial setback following a strategic decision to eliminate unsuccessful podcast ventures, including the termination of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's contract with the renowned music giant, which occurred last month. The company disclosed that this financial impact was due to expenses related to "write-offs and contract termination" incurred while rationalizing their podcast content portfolio.

Spotify's CEO, Daniel Ek, candidly acknowledged the need to step away from certain deals and partnerships that did not yield favorable outcomes. He expressed regret over instances where the company may have overpaid relative to the actual value of those arrangements. This introspective approach reflects Spotify's commitment to refining their podcast offerings and optimizing their investments in pursuit of sustainable growth and enhanced user experiences.

When Meghan Markle’s Spotify podcast was snubbed

In January, Spotify underwent a workforce reduction, laying off approximately 6% of its employees, amounting to 6,600 individuals. Following this initial step, the company later implemented further cuts, with around 200 more employees, constituting 2% of Spotify's global workforce, being affected in a strategic realignment of their group, particularly the podcast vertical and other functions. Sahar Elhabashi, the head of Spotify's podcast business, communicated this challenging but essential decision through a blog post.

The impetus for these cost-cutting measures came after the much-anticipated audio deal with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle failed to generate the projected revenue. Consequently, Spotify snubbed the couple's podcast, with insiders suggesting that they didn't meet the productivity benchmarks required for a full payout. Despite this setback, there are reports that Meghan is planning to create more podcasts.

Initially, Spotify planned to release a second season of the couple's podcast after the completion of the first season. However, sources close to Harry and Meghan indicate that they intend to discontinue making Netflix documentaries, publishing memoirs, and participating in interviews that could cast a negative light on the Royal Family.

Recent reports have hinted at financial pressures faced by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, making it challenging to sustain their current lifestyle. While Meghan's Spotify podcast faced rejection, their Netflix deal appears to remain intact.

In light of their situation, there have been rumors that Prince Harry reached out to Prince William to discuss the possibility of returning to the UK. Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams views this potential decision as a potential "humiliation" for the couple.
