Significant Dip in Groundwater Levels

Chandigarh, in a cause for concern, has witnessed a substantial 28.5% decline in groundwater levels over the past decade. Data collected by the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) in November last year indicates that out of 14 wells analyzed, five wells experienced a 35.7% rise in groundwater levels, while nine wells suffered a severe 64.3% decrease.

Causes and Impact

The depleting groundwater in Chandigarh can be attributed to two main factors: excessive extraction and inadequate recharge of groundwater. Over-extraction due to increasing water demand for various purposes, coupled with poor recharge practices, has led to this worrying situation. The consequences of this trend could be far-reaching, affecting both the environment and the region's water supply sustainability.

Government Initiatives and Challenges

Addressing the situation, Minister of State for Jal Shakti Bishweswar Tudu highlighted the decline in groundwater levels across various parts of the country, driven by factors like population growth, industrialization, and urbanization. While the identification and management of groundwater challenges largely fall under the states' jurisdiction, the Central Government has taken measures like the Jal Shakti Abhiyan (JSA) to promote rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge. Despite efforts to combat the issue, sustainable management of groundwater remains a pressing challenge.
