The Call for Accountability and Monitoring of Investigation

The Supreme Court of India, led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, has taken a crucial step in seeking a comprehensive approach to tackle violence against women in strife-torn Manipur. During a recent hearing of a batch of petitions related to the violence in the state, the court asked for the development of a broad mechanism to address these disturbing incidents.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, expressed no objection to the apex court monitoring the investigation into the Manipur violence, further highlighting the government's willingness to ensure accountability.

Disturbing Incidents and Judicial Response

The court's concern was sparked by a distressing video that emerged on May 4, showing two women being paraded naked in Manipur. This appalling act prompted the Supreme Court to assert that such violence against women is wholly unacceptable in a constitutional democracy. The bench, comprising Justice J B Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra, swiftly directed the Centre and Manipur government to take immediate remedial and preventive actions to address the situation.

Government's Response and Steps Towards Justice

In response to the incident, the Centre transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to ensure a fair and unbiased inquiry. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) demonstrated its commitment to safeguarding women's rights by stating that the government has "zero tolerance towards any crimes against women." The MHA also requested the top court to transfer the trial outside Manipur to expedite the judicial process and ensure timely justice for the victims. As of now, seven individuals have been arrested in connection with the case.

Background and Ongoing Strife in Manipur

Manipur has been grappling with ethnic violence since May 3, when a 'Tribal Solidarity March' triggered unrest in the hill districts. The march was organized to protest against the demand by the majority Meitei community for Scheduled Tribe status.

This unrest has resulted in numerous fatalities and injuries, creating a tense and volatile environment in the state.
