Chandigarh Extends Deadline to Achieve Solar Power Generation Target

Chandigarh, the model solar city, had set an ambitious target of 75 MW solar power generation by August 15, 2023. However, as of June 30, the city had achieved only 63.59 MW. In response to the delay, The Chandigarh Renewable Energy and Science and Technology Promotion Society (CREST) decided to extend the deadline to December 2023.

Chandigarh's Plan for Sustainable Energy Future

With a new target of 100 MW by 2025, Chandigarh is determined to harness solar power as its primary energy source by 2030. The governing body of CREST approved several solar power projects, including two floating solar power plants at the waterworks in Sector 39. Additionally, 20 solar power plants with a combined capacity of 4.5 MW are expected to be completed by July.

Under this plan, a 4 MW solar power plant will be established on the Patiala Ki Rao rivulet near the Botanical Garden in Sarangpur. Another 2 MW power plant is planned on the rivulet opposite the dumping ground in Dadumajra. Moreover, an additional 2 MW plant will be set up on N-Choe near the Garden of Conifers in Sector 52, and a 500 kW plant near the Sports Complex in Sector 42.

To ensure the successful implementation of its solar power goals, Chandigarh will hire a consultant to devise a detailed strategy that aligns with the city's vision for a sustainable energy future. With these efforts, Chandigarh aims to lead the way towards a greener and cleaner tomorrow.
