State-backed oil marketing companies have brought relief to consumers by reducing the prices of commercial LPG gas cylinders by an impressive Rs 99.75 per cylinder. This significant revision in rates came into effect from Tuesday, offering respite to households and businesses alike. With the new rates in place, a 19 kg cooking gas cylinder will now be available for Rs 1,680 in Delhi and marginally higher in other major cities across India.
As per sources reported by news agency ANI, the retail prices of a 19 kg cooking gas cylinder stand at Rs 1,802.50 in Kolkata, Rs 1,640.50 in Mumbai, and Rs 1,852.50 in Chennai. These revised rates reflect the latest move by state-backed oil companies to alleviate the financial burden on consumers.
The 19 kg LPG cylinder rates were previously revised on July 4 this year. Prior to the recent reduction, a 19 kg LPG cylinder cost Rs 1,780 in Delhi, Rs 1,895.50 in Kolkata, Rs 1,733.50 in Mumbai, and Rs 1,945 in Chennai. The notable decrease in the current rates comes as a welcome development for consumers who were facing higher prices in the preceding period.

While commercial LPG cylinder rates experience a reduction, the prices of 14.2 kg LPG cylinders for domestic use have not been revised. The rates for domestic cooking gas cylinders were last updated on March 1 this year, with a non-subsidized 14.2 kg LPG cylinder costing Rs 1,103 in Delhi, Rs 1,129 in Kolkata, Rs 1,102.50 in Mumbai, and Rs 1,118.50 in Chennai.
LPG cylinder rates undergo revision on the first day of every month. Prior to the recent revision, prices had seen fluctuations in previous months, experiencing increases in June after price cuts in April, May, and June. In March, LPG cylinder prices had been hiked by Rs 50 per cylinder, followed by successive reductions of Rs 91.50 in April, Rs 171.50 in May, and Rs 83.50 in June.
Addressing concerns about the impact of rising LPG prices in India, Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, informed the Rajya Sabha that India imports over 60% of its domestic LPG consumption, with prices linked to the international market. However, the government continues to provide support to eligible beneficiaries through credited subsidies. Additionally, the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) has initiated a targeted subsidy of Rs 200 per 14.2 kg cylinder for up to 12 refills a year for beneficiaries during 2022-23 and 2023-24.
With the latest reduction in commercial LPG cylinder rates, the government's efforts to support consumers and ease financial burdens during challenging economic times are evident. While domestic LPG cylinder rates remain unaffected, the recent measures by state-backed oil companies provide a glimmer of hope for households and businesses alike, paving the way for a more sustainable and affordable energy future.
