The Chhattisgarh government, led by Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, has taken a significant step to introduce a 58% reservation policy in admissions to educational institutions across the state. This move comes in line with the interim order issued by the Supreme Court on May 1, 2023, granting permission for the implementation of the reservation.

Supreme Court's Temporary Concession Leads to Action

After a three-month period since the Supreme Court granted temporary permission, the Chhattisgarh administration, under Chief Minister Baghel's leadership, has decided to begin the process of applying the 58% reservation policy. This policy benefits Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in admission processes, aligning with the interim order's directives.

The Chhattisgarh government had previously faced legal challenges regarding a 2022 amendment to the 2011 reservation law that aimed to establish a 58% reservation. The Supreme Court's intervention came as it stayed a Chhattisgarh high court decision that deemed this amendment "unconstitutional."

Through this decision, the Chhattisgarh government moves closer to enhancing educational opportunities and promoting inclusivity through increased representation for marginalized communities.
