As Uttarakhand battles relentless rainfall, the region has been placed on high alert due to the potential threat of landslides and severe waterlogging. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'red' alert for most districts of the hill state from August 11-14, along with an 'orange' alert. In the midst of these warnings, the Uttarakhand Police has also issued an advisory, urging residents to exercise caution and take necessary precautions.
Uttarakhand's authorities are leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to ensure public safety. The 'red' alert serves as a stark indication of the gravity of the situation. The advisory includes crucial information, outlining potential hazards:
1. Risk of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall: Lightning and very heavy to extremely heavy rain, coupled with thunder, are expected.
2. Landslide and rockfall risk: Sensitive areas might experience landslides and rockfalls, necessitating heightened vigilance.
3. Flooding and waterlogging: There's a possibility of rapid river and drain water level rise, leading to waterlogging in low-lying regions.
The advisory urges residents to take immediate action, emphasizing the importance of safe travel, seeking shelter in secure structures, and avoiding outdoor activities during this turbulent period. Staying informed about weather forecasts is also recommended.

The relentless rainfall has wreaked havoc across the state. According to IMD data, in a span of 24 hours up to Thursday at 8:30 am, Uttarakhand experienced substantial precipitation. Dehradun recorded the highest rainfall at 109.6 mm, followed by Udham Singh Nagar at 65.3 mm and Champawat at 34.2 mm. The inclement weather has led to tragedies, with two individuals losing their lives in rain-related incidents. In Doiwala, a 12-year-old girl tragically perished when her house's wall collapsed, while a 15-year-old boy drowned while crossing the Baur River in Kaladhungi area.
The heavy downpours have not only claimed lives but have also disrupted essential infrastructure. Landslides, a common occurrence during such rainfall, have blocked highways leading to significant pilgrimage sites like Kedarnath, Badrinath, and Gangotri. The aftermath of these landslides has led to pilgrims being stranded temporarily, highlighting the difficulties faced by those journeying to these sacred destinations.

The recent recovery of two bodies from a landslide in Gaurikund underscores the magnitude of the challenges posed by these natural disasters. The devastating impacts on bridges and roads, as seen in Rudraprayag, Pauri Garhwal, and Nainital districts, further emphasize the need for a coordinated response to ensure public safety and infrastructure resilience.
