On Sunday night, a bout of gunfire broke out at the well-known Shah Cheragh shrine in southern Iran, causing injuries to at least four individuals, as confirmed by authorities. The details surrounding the attack remained muddled right after the incident, as conflicting information was provided by both state media and semiofficial news agencies.
Reports from different sources diverged concerning the attack that occurred at Shah Cheragh. The state-run IRNA news agency stated that four people had sustained injuries, comprising two shrine workers and two pilgrims. However, the exact nature and circumstances of the attack remained unclear during the initial aftermath of the shooting.
Shah Cheragh holds a significant place among Iran's top five Shiite shrines. Situated in the city of Shiraz, approximately 675 kilometers to the south of Iran's capital, Tehran, the shrine attracts numerous pilgrims seeking spiritual solace and religious reverence.
This incident of violence follows a previous attack on the same shrine in October 2022. During that attack, 13 individuals lost their lives, and many others were wounded. The responsibility for the assault was claimed by the Islamic State group. Iranian authorities revealed that the attacker, originally from Tajikistan, was eventually apprehended by security forces. Unfortunately, he succumbed to injuries sustained during his detention, passing away in a hospital.
