The hill states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand in India have been grappling with severe weather challenges, resulting in substantial damage and loss of life over the past few months. To address the ongoing weather woes, the meteorological department has recently issued alerts for these regions. In Himachal Pradesh, the situation is equally dire, with 338 people losing their lives in rain-related incidents and road accidents since the monsoon began on June 24. Tragic events, such as landslides and temple collapses, have contributed to the increasing death toll. Of the 338 deaths, 221 are attributed to rain-related incidents.
Following a tragic landslide in the Summer Hill area of Shimla district, search and rescue operations have continued for several days. The efforts aim to recover missing individuals and provide assistance to those affected by the disaster. The devastation has also prompted a visit from Bharatiya Janata Party National President JP Nadda to assess the situation.
The relentless rain has led to landslides, cloudbursts, and flash floods, causing substantial damage in both Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. As a response, the Himachal Pradesh government has declared the entire state as a 'natural calamity affected area.' The monetary loss in Himachal Pradesh alone has reached a staggering ₹8,014.61 crore since June 24. Moreover, 2,022 houses have been fully damaged, and 9,615 houses have suffered partial damage. Additionally, there have been 113 landslides during this monsoon season.
