PM Modi highlights unity and expansion at BRICS Summit in Johannesburg

Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a compelling speech at the BRICS summit in Johannesburg, emphasizing the historical ties between Johannesburg and India and sparking a warm dialogue between the two nations. He recalled Mahatma Gandhi's Tolstoy farm, a place that fostered unity between Eurasia and Africa's philosophies.

PM Modi began his speech by highlighting the significant historical ties between Johannesburg and India, particularly focusing on Mahatma Gandhi's Tolstoy farm, which was established 110 years ago. He spoke of how Gandhi's farm united the philosophies of Eurasia and Africa, forming a strong foundation of unity and mutual harmony.

Expansion of BRICS and unity building

PM Modi emphasized the importance of expanding the BRICS membership and welcomed over 40 countries expressing interest in joining the bloc. He stressed that India supports this expansion based on consensus. He acknowledged India's role in guiding the forging of a consensus on membership criteria and selection of new members during the Leaders' Retreat, with a focus on incorporating strategic partners.

The Prime Minister commended the significant progress achieved by BRICS over the past two decades and highlighted the role of the New Development Bank in facilitating progress in Global South countries. He pointed out initiatives like the Contingency Reserve Arrangement and the BRICS satellite constellation, which contribute to positive changes. PM Modi highlighted successes like the youth summit, BRICS games, think tank council, and proposed expansions in space research and weather monitoring for global welfare.

PM Modi proposed a five-point plan to enhance BRICS cooperation and future-readiness. He lauded India's diversity and proposed shared platforms to spotlight solutions for global implementation. He suggested cooperation in space exploration, education, skill development, and technology. He cited examples like India's DIKSHA platform for remote education access and ‘ATAL tinkering labs’ for promoting innovation. Additionally, he proposed joint efforts for the protection of big cats and the creation of a repository for traditional medicine, acknowledging shared ecosystems among the BRICS countries.
