The National Curriculum Framework (NCF) for School Education in 2023, as announced by the Education Ministry, is introducing significant changes to the way board exams are conducted in India. The new framework aims to make board exams more flexible and relevant for students.

Twice-a-Year Board Exams

One of the notable changes is the introduction of board exams twice a year. This means that students will have the opportunity to take their board exams not just once, but twice annually. Comprehensive Test Item Bank

To enable this shift to bi-annual exams, the NCF proposes the creation of a "comprehensive test item bank." This bank will contain a wide range of test questions that can be used to create exams. These tests can be generated using suitable software, making the process more efficient and accessible. The NCF envisions a future where exams can be taken on-demand. This means that students can choose the timing of their exams based on their preparedness, further enhancing flexibility and reducing the stress associated with rigid exam schedules.

Challenges of Current Board Exams

The NCF also acknowledges the limitations of the current board exam system. It notes that the existing system primarily evaluates a student's ability to memorize facts, which is not the sole purpose of examinations. The framework suggests that board exams should assess a broader range of competencies outlined in the curriculum, providing a more accurate reflection of a student's performance.

Competency-Based Assessment

According to the NCF, board exams should evaluate students based on the competencies specified in the curriculum. This approach aims to offer a fair and dependable assessment of a student's capabilities, moving away from rote memorization as the primary focus.
