Japan expresses concern over China's seafood import ban

Japan has strongly criticized China's ban on Japanese seafood following the discharge of treated radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear plant. The Japanese foreign ministry has called China's actions "totally unacceptable."

Japan has responded to China's notification to the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding the suspension of Japanese aquatic imports, which began last month. Japan has expressed its intent to present its arguments on this matter in relevant WTO committees. Furthermore, Japan has urged China to swiftly reverse this import ban.

Potential WTO complaint and US support

There are indications from Japanese officials that they may consider filing a formal complaint with the WTO concerning China's ban on seafood imports from Japan. The United States ambassador to Japan has stated that the US would support Japan in pursuing such a complaint.

In a separate statement, Japan's foreign ministry has revealed that it has formally requested China to engage in discussions regarding the import ban related to Fukushima under the provisions of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) trade pact. Japan has expressed the hope that China will promptly engage in these discussions and review its measures in alignment with its obligations under the RCEP Agreement.
