In a positive development for the Indian automotive industry, retail sales of automobiles witnessed a robust increase of 9% in August, according to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). This growth was observed across all segments, including passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, commercial vehicles, tractors, and three-wheelers.
The total retail sales in August climbed to 18,18,647 units, marking a significant rise from 16,74,162 units in August 2022. Passenger vehicle registrations surged by 7% to reach 3,15,153 units in August, up from 2,95,842 units during the same period last year. The improved supply of vehicles, complemented by expanded customer schemes, contributed to this growth. Two-wheeler sales recorded a notable 6% increase, reaching 12,54,444 units compared to 11,80,230 units in August of the previous year. However, Singhania noted that despite this growth, consumer sentiment remained somewhat uncertain, affecting conversion rates and intensifying competition among key industry players.
Commercial vehicle registrations grew by 3%, with 75,294 units sold last month compared to 72,940 units in the same period last year. Tractor sales, on the other hand, experienced a significant jump of 14%, reaching 73,849 units in August as opposed to 65,018 units in the corresponding period last year. The three-wheeler segment witnessed remarkable growth, with retail sales surging by an impressive 66%. In August, 99,907 units were sold, compared to 60,132 units in August 2022.
